Obituary for Helena Olga Baker

BAKER: Helena Olga (nee Micke), age 84 years, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2017 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Helen was born in Whitemouth, Manitoba on January 21, 1932. Helen is survived by her son Glen (Carol) and grandchildren Caitlin and Logan; daughter Barb Law (Terry Hall) and adopted granddaughter Darby MacDonald; sister Hildegarde; brothers Albert (Berret), Norman (Marcia); sister-in-law Betty Jean Delay and by many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Julianna Micke, husband Curtis, brothers-in-law Donald Baker and Otto Merke and son-in-law Jim Law. Helen and Curtis were married for nearly 50 years and they enjoyed RVing, snow birding to Texas and travelling abroad. Recently travelling has been to both her children's homes. It gave her great pleasure to watch Caitlin and Logan play the fiddle and would travel to neighboring cities to hear them play at fiddle competitions, or to travel to Calgary to watch hockey and baseball games of Barb's grandchildren (Kaden and Alex). Helen has always been known as a good cook and baker. She loved gardening, sewing, crafts and lunches with her girlfriends. Mom's greatest love was family and extended family. Her fondest times were family reunions, birthdays and anniversaries. After graduating from Normal School, Helen worked as a teacher for one year at Bird River, Manitoba. She later worked at Great West Life in Winnipeg and enjoyed the baseball and bowling leagues. After marrying Curtis and having two children they settled in Brandon in 1966. Helen worked at Assiniboine Community College, Hoods Auto Parts and Cook Lumber. But the job she loved the most was being a mother. She took that job seriously, gave us a solid foundation and then she encouraged us to fly on our own. She was proud of our accomplishments as she was our biggest supporter and always there with an encouraging word whenever needed. We will sadly miss her big smile and huge hugs. Viewing will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Service in Brandon will be at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 114 Ashgrove Blvd, on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Laurel Seyfert officiating. A second Funeral Service will take place in River Hills, Manitoba at the St. Paul Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Richard Engel officiating. Viewing will also take place at the church from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. prior to each service. Interment will follow at Oldenburg Cemetery, Whitemouth, Manitoba. A reception will follow each service. Donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3-2430 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7B 0M5.
