There are many things that need to be done at the time of a funeral.  Some estimates say there are more than 200 things that need to be taken care of at the time of a death and in the planning of the funeral. Many of these items can be planned for and discussed ahead of time alleviating the family of the stress of deciding what their loved one would have wanted.  Your funeral director can help with many of the items and would be more than willing to help work through this with you.

Some of the more common items that need attention at the time of a death are:

  • notifying the doctor or medical examiner
  • notify the funeral director
  • arrange for a plot or the interment at the cemetery
  • call the relatives
  • notify employer
  • arrange for a musicians or music for the service
  • decide on pallbearers or urnbearer
  • notify insurance companies
  • place newspaper notices
  • select clothing for the deceased
  • select a casket
  • choose floral arrangements
  • decide on location for the service
  • arrange transportation for the family

  • preparing and signing necessary papers
  • answering innumerable phone calls and messages
  • greeting friends and relatives who call
  • providing lodging for out-of-town guests
and pay for some or all of the following:
  • ambulance fees

  • funeral home costs
