Obituary for Ivan Hudson Mealy

Ivan Hudson Mealy
MEALY: With family by his side, Ivan Hudson Mealy passed away peacefully on August 6, 2016 at the Boissevain Health Centre. Ivan was born March 17, 1931 at Fairfax, MB to parents Fern and Welland Mealy. Ivan attended Fairfax School and spent all his life farming on the Mealy homestead, which was founded by his grandfather, William Mealy who immigrated from the Isle of Man. This same farm was declared a Centennial Farm by the Manitoba Historical Society in 1998. In his teen years, while farming, he met Grace Paterson, a teacher in the district, and they were married on March 5, 1955 at Portage la Prairie, MB. He was a long time member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, as had been his father and grandfather. Ivan was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church in Fairfax until its closing in the late sixties. Ivan enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was dedicated to his work and took much pride in the fruits of his labours. His main joys were his farm, his family and his grandsons Stirling, Taylor, and Hudson who spent their formative years on the farm with Grandpa. One of Ivan’s greatest attributes was his sharp wit and sense of humour which will remain with us always. Hardly a day goes by without one of us using his favourite funny one-liners which is a constant reminder of Dad. Summers found Ivan camping at nearby lakes and winters travelling to warmer climates such as Palm Springs, Phoenix, Hawaii and Vancouver Island, BC. An exciting time for Ivan was an Alaskan cruise for all of his family to be together for his 80th birthday. Dad and Mom were honoured as King and Queen of the Cruise for being the oldest couple on the dance floor. Ivan is survived by his loving wife Grace (Paterson); daughter Marvie (George) of Nanaimo, BC and their sons Stirling of Halifax, NS and Gregory of Geneva, Switzerland; son Trevor (Ruth) of Minto, MB and their sons Taylor and Hudson. He is also survived by his sisters Doreen Halladay of Boissevain, MB and Yvonne Patterson of Brandon, MB, and one sister-in-law Gladys Paterson of Portage la Prairie, MB as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ivan was predeceased by his parents Fern and Welland Mealy; grandparents Esther and William Mealy and Fannie and William Hudson; brothers-in-law, Lorne Halladay, Murray Patterson, Guthrie Paterson, Paul Olson and George Maguire; sisters-in-law, Jean Maguire and Margaret Olson; nephew, Ken Olson and several aunts and uncles. Ivan’s family would like to express its sincere gratitude to Dr. Nell and the wonderful hospital staff at Boissevain Health Centre, especially the kindness and superior care he received while a patient at Evergreen Personal Care Home. The thoughtfulness, generosity and cheery attitude of the Palliative Care group will always be appreciated and remembered. The family is also thankful for the support and care shown to Ivan during his long hospital stay from his many relatives and friends in the community through visits, flowers, cards and baking. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel, Brandon, MB on Friday, August 12, 2016. Rev. Harvey Hurren officiated. The private interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in December 2016. In lieu of flowers, and if friends so desire, donations in memory of Ivan may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 3-824 18th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 5B7 or Palliative Care, Boissevain Health Centre, P.O. Box 899, Boissevain, MB R0K 0E0.
