Obituary for Mildred Elizabeth Yonda

Mildred Elizabeth Yonda
YONDA: Mildred Elizabeth passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Born Mildred Elizabeth Ishenberg on September 9, 1924 to Albert and Julie Ishenberg. She attended school in Langford until grade nine then went to Neepawa for ten, eleven, twelve. After grade twelve she went to Normal school for one year to become a teacher. Mildred's first teaching job was at Hallboro, then Miami, Inkerman, Brookdale, and Oxford House. Leaving Oxford House she did something different and worked at a bank in Winnipeg. It was there she decided to take courses to teach business. Her first business teaching job was at a Winnipeg high school. She worked there until she married Walter Yonda in 1958 and moved to Portage la Prairie. Walter opened Active Refrigeration and Mildred opened her own business called Portage Business College. A daughter and son were soon born. In 1975 the family moved to Brandon where they would be closer to family. Mildred worked at ACC until she officially retired. A cabin was built at Sandy Lake where many enjoyable years were spent. Mildred got the most enjoyment playing cards with the many friends she made at Prairie Oasis, Valleyview, and Seniors for Seniors. She was a pioneer for working moms. Her career was very important to her as was taking care of her family. Her sharp wit, intelligence and humor was admired by all. The last couple of years her health was declining but not her mind. She was always up to date on world issues and sporting events. She will be sadly missed. Mildred is survived by daughter Myrna (Keith) Sowiak; grandchildren Jared and Devon; son Andy (Jennifer) Yonda; grandchildren Riley, Lucas, and Jacob; sisters-in-law Rose (Alec) Packan, Jean Gilbert, Mary Rohlfs, and Joyce Yonda as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Albert and Julie; sister Ida (John) Sumner; brothers Harold (Marion) Ishenberg and Ernest Ishenberg; sisters-in-law Sophie Yonda, Stella (Richard) Dyck, Irene Yonda, Kay (Peter) Palidwar; brothers-in-law Wray Gilbert, Carl Rohlfs, Joe (Julie and Norma) Yonda, John Yonda, Stanley Yonda; nephews Ken Yonda, Bill Sumner and nieces Marie Wilson and Edith Harstene. A private family graveside will take place at Riverside Neepawa Cemetery this summer. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Mildred may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 8 - 940 Princess Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 0P6 or to a charity of choice.
