Phyllis Madryga, formerly of Trinity and Shoal Harbour, NF, passed peacefully on the morning of Friday, December 20, 2019 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Mom was born in 1924 to Sydney and Hilda Jewitt in the town of Brentwood, UK. She qualified as a doctor from the University of Dundee in 1948 and immigrated to Canada in the late 1950's, where she met and married her late husband Alexander Madryga. After a period away from medicine to raise their three boys, she re-qualified as a doctor in Canada, taking up a medical practice as Dr. Phyllis H. Duncan in the rural municipality of Trinity, Newfoundland, from which she retired in 1993. Phyllis is survived by her sons Ian (Donna and Trevor), Peter (Pearl and Chelsea), and Paul. On Monday, December 23, 2019 at 10:30 a.m., family and friends will gather for a Funeral Mass at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church, 327-4th Street, to honour her memory and celebrate a rich, rewarding life well-lived. A reception will follow in St. Augustine's Square. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the kind people at Valleyview Personal Care Home for the high-quality professional care that Phyllis received while there, and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be made to The Dr. Phyllis H.
