Obituary for Jake Harder

Jake Harder passed away peacefully into the presence of his heavenly Father on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the age of 95 years. He was born on May 18, 1924 to Abram and Susanne Harder in Nikolaywka, Russia. He, along with his parents and two sisters immigrated to Canada in 1929, settling near Brookdale, Manitoba. In 1948, he married Erica Loewen. They farmed in the Moore Park area for 62 years. Jake loved being surrounded by his family. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were always excited when they came to visit. He loved telling them stories of his childhood. Jake was proud to be a farmer. He considered farming and feeding the world as his God-given ministry. He was dedicated to his church and his community. He was baptized in his teens and became a member of the Justice Mennonite Brethren Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving as Sunday School Superintendent. Horses were his passion and he loved to give many sleigh rides and drove his team of horses in community parades. Over the years Jake served on the Moore Park Pool Elevator Board, and also enjoyed the times he drove the school bus as a spare bus driver in the Rolling River School Division. Auction sales, attending the Manitoba Royal Winter Fair and the Manitoba Threshermen’s Reunions were also always a highlight for him. In 2010 Jake and Erica retired from farming and moved to Monterey Estates in Brandon and eight years later they moved into Fairview Home. He enjoyed making new friends, participating in many of the activities and listening to music and entertainment from the various music groups that entertained there. Jake is remembered by his children Eleanor (Gerry) Epp, Audrey Harder, Phil (Connie) Harder, Dorothy (Ray) Wieler, and their families; one sister, Mary Willms and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Erica on February 5, 2019, one daughter in infancy, daughter-in-law Sharon Harder, one sister and one brother. A memorial service was held on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Richmond Park Church in Brandon, Manitoba. For those who so desire, donations in memory of Jake may be made to Fairview Home Foundation, 1351 – 13th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4S6. The family would like to thank the staff at Fairview Home for the excellent care he received as a resident there and the many years of care he received from Dr. Groves.
