Obituary for Ted Marvin Carlson

Ted Marvin Carlson
Peacefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 19, 2019, while surrounded by family, Ted Carlson lost his battle with cancer. Ted will be lovingly remembered by his wife Daphne, children: Angela, Jeffrey and Michael (Kayla) and grandchildren: Anthony, Clint, Alicia, Skyler and Derrick. Also missing Ted are his brothers Gary, John (Leona) and Ron along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Archie and Belle Carlson, infant brother Glen and sister-in-law Ann Carlson. Ted was born and raised in the Preeceville/Sturgis, Saskatchewan area; the fourth born of five boys. After leaving school early, Ted worked at various jobs in and around the local communities. Like many young people, Ted set off to explore British Columbia and later returned to Saskatchewan as a young man. He completed his GED and a pre-employment welding course in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. While working in Yorkton, Ted met his future bride, Daphne. Ted and Daphne were married March 1, 1975 and in October the following year, they welcomed the arrival of their first child, Angela. When Angela was just a few months old, the family moved to Manitoba where Jeffrey was born in 1979 and Michael completed the family in 1986. Brandon was by then, home. Ted worked at a variety of hands on/ trade based jobs prior to starting with Manitoba Government Services. There he worked at Brandon Correctional Centre, Manitoba Fire College, Assiniboine Community College and finally with the Government Trades Pool out of Brandon. In addition to the daily grind of life, Ted made time for the kids’ extra curricular activities, volunteered as a Cub Leader and coached soccer. As the kids got older, he ensured they all had a vehicle to drive and did his best to teach them how to maintain them. In 2010, Ted and Daphne were overjoyed with the arrival of their first grandchild, Anthony. Things kept getting better with the addition of Kayla, Skyler and Derrick to the family and then the birth of Clint (2016) and Alicia (2017). Ted retired in 2011 and resumed riding his motorcycle; a passion that had been on hold. He was diagnosed with and beat throat cancer that year. In 2012, Daphne retired and the couple spent time camping, travelling, exploring local attractions and communities and of course quality time with their grandchildren. In late September 2019, Ted was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Ted will be remembered for always being willing to lend a helping hand, being quick with a laugh and his winks. The family would like to thank A3 Palliative Care Unit and a special appreciation for the kindness and compassion shown by Dr. C. Minders. The Celebration of Ted’s Life was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, November 22, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, Unit 301 - 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6, CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or a charity of choice.
