Obituary for Grace Slawa Olha Hackenschmidt

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Baba and sister Grace Slawa Olha Hackenschmidt (nee Dushnicky) on Friday, October 18, 2019 at the age of 91 years. Mom was born at Oakburn, MB on August 9, 1928 to Harry and Natashia Dushnicky. The family had 4 sons and 6 daughters of which Mom was the youngest. Her early life was spent on the farm at Oakburn, MB until she travelled to Brandon, MB in 1948 to accompany her older sister Jean. There she met her future husband Alfred Hackenschmidt, was engaged on March 17, 1949 and married on October 1, 1949. They were happily married for 67 years. From this union, they were blessed with 2 loving daughters – Beverley Smith and Brenda Hardy. Grace was a very caring and loving person – always had a helping hand and was generous to her family and friends. She was a dedicated wife who devoted her life to her family and was a “stay at home” Mom who preferred the simple things in life. Her pride and joy was her grandson Ryan and her great grandson Finn. She had so many great memories that she cherished when all the family was together. She was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Mom will be dearly missed by her loving daughters Beverley Smith and Brenda Hardy, son-in-law Colin Hardy of Brandon, MB; grandson Ryan Smith and great grandson Finn Smith of Warman, SK. Also surviving Grace are her loving sister Jean Ewanyshyn of Brandon, MB; sisters-in-law Doris Hackenschmidt of Edmonton, AB and Marie Folmes of Gimli, MB plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. Grace was predeceased by her loving husband Alfred Hackenschmidt on September 25, 2016; her parents Harry and Natashia Dushnicky; brothers Mike (Rose), Peter (Helen), twins Orest and Paul Dushnicky and sisters Mary, Myrt and Ann Dushnicky and Irene (Bill) Illchuk. To celebrate a life well lived, join with family and friends on Friday, October 25, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North with Pastor Laurel Seyfert from Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 114 Ashgrove Blvd, Brandon, MB R7B 1E1 or a charity of their own choice.

Thanks Mom for all the love, support and happiness you gave us. We are so lucky to have had you for our Mother and will keep you in our hearts forever. We know you and Dad are together again. We love you forever!
