Obituary for George Frederick John Roberds

George Frederick John, age 88 years, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. George was born in Brandon on November 23, 1930 to John and Julia Roberds. He grew up in Manitoba and moved around the province many times in his life before settling down in Brandon. As a kid he enjoyed baseball and curling but spent a good deal of his time working on the family farm. He moved to BC in his mid-20’s to work as a welder and it was in BC that he met his wife Ruby and were together for 40 years. They moved back to Manitoba following a few years in Lethbridge where he drove city bus. Upon their return to Manitoba, George and Ruby moved a house onto George’s parents farm and continued farming. Their grandsons, who they thought of as sons, Glenn, Jim and Rick grew up on this farm. George began working at Merv’s Used Furniture and Appliances before eventually buying it and running it as a family business until his retirement in 1990. George and Ruby moved from the farm to their house in Brandon, where they lived until their passing. Ruby passed away on November 17, 1998. A few years later, Norma, a friend from Nova Scotia, joined George and stayed with him until his passing. He was a member of the Legion for over 35 years and played in the pool league for about 10 years. George was very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime. George was predeceased by his loving wife Ruby, sister-in-law Eve and brother-in-law Vern. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter in-law Fran Moffat (Bill), grandsons Glenn (Sandra), Jim (JoAnn) and Rick (Sandy), great grandchildren Shannon, Shaina, Alex, Lydia and Selene, siblings Don, Harvey (Barb), Harold (Charolette), Judith and Hazel (Ray), numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Norma Evans. The family will cherish George’s memory privately
