Obituary for Gwendolyn Winnifred Eggleton (Ober)

Gwendolyn Winnifred Eggleton (Ober)
EGGLETON: Gwendolyn “Gwenn” Winnifred passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 with family by her side. Born at home on October 14, 1920, Gwenn was delivered by her grandmother, Marie Ober who was a midwife. Gwenn met her future husband, Irwin “Eggie” on August 28, 1933. Irwin was born the same day and year in Brandon and their birth announcements were in the same newspaper. While Irwin was enlisted in the Armed Forces, Gwenn worked at the Brandon Mental Health Centre as a cook. Gwenn left her position to travel to British Columbia and married Irwin in Vancouver on December 23, 1942; they celebrated 70 years of marriage. When Irwin went overseas Gwenn and their daughter Marilyn returned to Brandon to live with Gwenn’s parents. Upon Irwin’s return in 1945, they stayed at Gwenn’s parents and Janette was born during this time. The family then moved into the home that Irwin was raised in by his grandmother so they could care for her. After Irwin passed away Gwenn remained in the house until her passing. Gwenn loved her garden and flowers, especially her tomatoes that she grew from seed and shared with family and friends. Anyone who knew Gwenn heard about her dislike of weeding, especially Portulaca, right Kathy and Bruno? Gwenn loved to sew. Her love of sewing started in high school at Brandon Collegiate Institute. Her teacher, Miss Anne Wood, taught her to weave and she wove a plaid and herringbone fabric. From this fabric Gwenn made a red and green plaid jacket and green skirt. The outfit was entered into the Arts and Crafts competition at the 1939 Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba and won 1st place! In 2014, Gwenn donated her outfit to the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba and it is displayed, along with her picture and exhibitor tag, periodically at the Dome Building. Knitting, crafting and especially baking was her passion. Gwenn loved trying new recipes. Gwenn was also an avid bowler and loved to travel. She spent many summers at Clear Lake and enjoyed Fall and the changing of the leaves. While Gwenn was working at Ted Heming Jewellry Store the opportunity came up to care for the Keenan children. They continued to keep in touch over the years, holding a special place in Gwenn’s heart; and Gwenn held a special place in their hearts also. Gwenn was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church where she helped with suppers, teas, Christmas puddings and fundraising. Gwenn also volunteered at the YWCA Thrift Store and was on the board for 6 years, was a member of the Learning Disability Association and volunteered at the Nearly New Shop. Gwenn was predeceased by her parents Mary and John B. Ober and brother Jack Ober. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Marilyn (Ronn) Anderson and their children Eroca (Ryan), Bart and Bryan (Rosemari); and Janette (Garry) Haverstock and their children Chris (Pam) and Kyla (Greg); 9 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren and nephew Larry Ober, as well as special friends the Keenans: Greg (Ingrid), Tim (Nathaly), David (Cindy), Pauline (Nick) and Chris and their families; Ruth Pederson, Myrna Vercaigne, Jac Hiebert, Ron and Gay Metcalfe and Kathy and Bruno Bruederlin. Donations in memory of Gwenn may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 – 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6 or charity of choice.
