Obituary for Grietina "Tina" Dekker

Grietina "Tina" Dekker
The death of Grietina “Tina” Dekker, occurred on Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Brandon Manitoba. Grietina was born September 12, 1924 at Zweeloo, Nederlands and immigrated to Canada in April 1951. Her first year in Canada was spent in Oberon, Manitoba working on Frank May’s farm and then in 1952, Grietina and her family (husband Jan and son Albert) moved into Brandon. In Brandon, Grietina worked at the Assiniboine Hospital when it was located at 9th Street and Richmond Avenue. In 1954, Grietina and Jan built the family home on 5th Street and until May 2019 Grietina still lived there. In the early 1960’s, Grietina and Jan purchased a blue printing business called Brandon Reproductions. The business was sold in the 1970’s and Grietina became a homemaker after that. Grietina loved bingo, bowling (had a perfect game) and was an avid gardener. Much of the back yard was a vegetable garden and she also had fruit trees planted which for many years bore a large quantity of apples. Grietina spent many enjoyable weekends at the cabin in Minnedosa and for many years was an avid walker; outside in spring, summer and fall, and inside at the Shoppers Mall in winter. Grietina was predeceased by her husband Jan, with whom she spent a wonderful 72 married years; son Albert; parents Thieme and Grietje de Groote; and siblings Johannes, Hendrikjan, Jan, Gonda, Roalof and Lukas. She is survived by her children Tim (Susan), Ed (Leanne); grandchildren Brooke, Boyd, Kelsey, Kristin, Barry and Jordan; and great-grandchildren Kaleb, Rochelle, Adrian and Paige. A private family graveside ceremony was held at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Grietina may be made to The Canadian Paraplegic Association of Manitoba, Room 211 – 825 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3A 1M5.
