Obituary for Shirley Ann McManes

Shirley Ann McManes
Shirley Ann McManes, September 11, 1929 - July 10, 2019. On a warm, beautiful autumn day an incredible miracle happened for Annie and Luther Johnston. They were blessed with a healthy and beautiful baby girl. She was born on the family farm in Hamiota and they named her Shirley Ann Johnston, a young sister for Harris and Earle. Later she would become the proud older sister of Don. As she told the story, being the only girl in the family made her the apple of daddy’s eye. She talked of playing baseball and learning how to cook. If you were one of the lucky ones to be invited by her to share a meal, you sure wouldn’t say no. Mind you, you never had to be invited. She always had plenty and everyone was welcome! And all of us had our favorites. Shirley met Norman Mennie and it wasn’t long before they got hitched. They had three wonderful boys, Wayne, Rick and Cal and they can talk for hours about all the fun and exciting family times they shared together. Going on trips and flying their own plane. Norm had his pilots license and at age 36, Shirley worked hard and received her wings as well, such an accomplishment for those years. She was with the 99’s, a group of women pilots whom were instrumental in bringing the jet that is proudly displayed on #10 highway on the road to the airport. Those years were very special to every one of them. Going their separate ways, Shirley married Frank McManes and they spent the next 28 years having fun with their grandchildren, lake life, entertaining, dancing, and just generally enjoying life together. She was very active with the Air Commonwealth Museum and was a lifetime member. Shirly was predeceased by her infant son (1958), parents Annie and Luther, husband Frank, brother Harris and her grandson Josh in 2016. Remaining on and holding each special memory and recipes close to their own hearts are sons Wayne (Betty Anne), Rick (Kathy) and Cal (Carla); grandchild Jenna (Brad) and great grandchild Addison; stepchildren Janice, Jim, John, Joanne, Jeff and Jaye and their families. Shirley would be very sad to miss Lacey’s upcoming wedding, but we know she will be there in spirit. She is also survived by brothers Earle (Peg), Don (Isabel), sister-in-law Laurie and a wonderful clan of nieces and nephews. Mom, Mom-in-law, grandma and GG. You were a beautiful woman, exceptional mom and grandma. You taught each of us something and we promise you will live on through us (we may not ace the pies exactly...... but what can you do.) May your heart be free of fear and loneliness and that your many loved ones in heaven are sharing their love for you. “So I’ll sing Hallelujah. You were an angel in the shape of my mum. When I fell down you’d be there holding me up. Spread your wings as you go and when God takes you back He’ll say “Hallelujah” ... you’re home”. Love you. At Shirley's request a private family graveside service was held at the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium. Arlene Robertson officiated. Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, Box 3, Group 520, RR#5, Brandon, MB R7A 5Y5.
