Obituary for Jean Isobel Farley

Jean Isobel Farley (nee Cross) passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Jean was born in Meyronne, Saskatchewan to Jack and Marion Cross; she was the eldest of seven children. Jean started her elementary school in Woodrow, Saskatchewan until 1937 when the family bought a farm and moved to Griswold, Manitoba. Jean attend Griswold School until grade 11 and then attended Oak Lake School to graduate. She continued her education by enrolling in the nursing program at the Brandon General Hospital. It was at that time that Jean became ill with tuberculosis causing her to move to the Ninette Sanatorium, where she spent approximately 10 years. Her time there was a pivotal point in her life and her professional career; Jean started her training to become a lab technician and worked in the lab at the Sanatorium. She also became a beautiful artist during her time there and continued her passion for drawing and painting throughout her life. She picked up many skills while she was there and met a lifelong friend in Marion McCrae. After Jean completed her lab technician training at the Brandon Mental Health unit, she had the opportunity to travel and work in Hawaii for five years and New Zealand for three and a half years. Upon returning to Brandon, Jean worked at the Brandon General Hospital until her retirement. Jean married Earle Farley in November 1982 and they resided at the Farley family farm near Douglas. Jean loved the farm life and her garden; she won many awards for her peonies and lilies. They stayed on the farm until 2004 when Earle and Jean moved into Riverheights Terrace for the winters. They continued to enjoy their summers at the farm. During their winters at Riverheight Terrace, they made many good friends. Jean lived at Riverheights Terrace for 15 years and enjoyed many of the activities including playing pool and caring for the flower beds. In April 2019, Jean moved to the Hartney Personal Care home for only a few days. She found the view was very much like her home in Douglas; overlooking a pasture and the horses. Jean’s faith was very important to her and she was a member of the Douglas United Church. Left to mourn Jean's loss are her sister Winnifred Campbell of Calgary, brothers John (Dorothy) Cross of Griswold, Evans (Candace) Cross of Brandon, sisters-in-law Lorna Cross, Kay Cross and Iris Cross and many nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her husband Earle Farley, parents Jack and Marion Cross, brothers Stan, Archie and Joe Cross and brother-in-law Bill Campbell. The Celebration of Jean's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, Brandon on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating. A private family interment will be held at the Madford Cemetery.
