Obituary for John Gordon Peters

John Gordon Peters
John Gordon, of Brandon, formerly of Plumas, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, April 20, 2019. His son Brett was by his side, and Carol, Trevor and Shauna were just minutes away. John was born to C.W. and Mary Peters of the Lowe Farm/Altona area, on May 8, 1938. After schooling, his education continued through his life-long love of learning, still evident in his children and grandchildren today. John's early work life included shearing sheep, hauling bags of coal, and working in Thompson at the mine and in construction. In 1963, John, his parents, brother Bruce and sister Joanna moved to a mixed farm at Plumas. Ten years later, in 1973, John married Carol Morrison and together they farmed at Plumas. Quickly they converted to a grain-only operation; John believed that pigs and cattle were "just an expensive exercise". Always thinking ahead, John soon added on a steel machine shed and grain bins, and a new home. Over the years, John missed few mornings at the local coffee shop, also popping in almost daily at the local store, and sometimes even the Plumas Hotel. He enjoyed ice fishing, and keeping up with the latest technology. John and Carol retired to Brandon in late 2012. He enjoyed sitting in the sun on the deck, supervising the care of his tomato plants. John was a true farmer - he loved watching his crops grow. And his favourite "crop" of all was his grandchildren. John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol; son Trevor, his wife Caroline and their son Colin; daughter Shauna and her daughter Ophelia; and son Brett, his wife Kaleigh, their son Oakley and daughter Eberley. He is also survived by his sister Edith (Bernie) Friesen, brother Cliff, brother Bruce (Bernice) and sister Joanna Baskin, and their families. John was predeceased by his parents and infant brother, as well as sister-in-law Hazel Peters and brother-in-law Ken Baskin. The Celebration of John's Life was held Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Memories Chapel, Brandon. Wendy Denbow officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to Diabetes Canada, 1400-522 University Avenue, Toronto, ON M5G 2R5 or to a charity of one's choice.
