Obituary for Eva Annie Gooden (Patterson)

Eva Annie Gooden (Patterson)
Eva Annie (Gouldie) (nee Patterson), age 96 years, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home. Eva, the oldest of 5 children was born September 23, 1922 to Alvin and Bessie Patterson. She was raised on a farm in the Municipality of Morton and attended school at Richview and Boissevain. Her parents bought her a violin when she was 12 years old which she continued to play throughout her life. Eva received her Teaching Certificate from Brandon Normal School in 1941. During her teaching career, she taught at Bethel, Bluevale, Riverbank, Desford, Minto, Lake Max, BrownLea, and McLaren, BCI and New Era in Brandon. All of her schools had multiple grades in one room, other than the Brandon schools. On January 3,1946, she married Leonard Gouldie. They resided on a farm south of Boissevain where they began raising their 5 children. Eva was a member of the Boissevain Legion Auxiliary and the Manitoba Teachers' Society as well as being an active member of St. Paul’s United Church. During their time on the farm, she played the violin at school dances and family events. In 1957, the family moved to Boissevain. Leonard passed away in January 1966. That summer, Eva moved to Brandon with 4 of her children. While teaching, she took classes at Brandon University to complete her Bachelor of Teaching degree in 1975 – quite a feat! In 1975, Eva’s mother, Bessie moved in with her and son Merle, sharing an apartment. Eva and Bessie enjoyed trips to B.C. with a Boler trailer which they also used for camping locally. They took tours to Newfoundland and Great Britain. Eva joined the Barbershop Belles and a 5 pin bowling league. After 29 years of teaching, Eva retired in 1980 and on July 5, 1980, she married Rae Gooden. They resided in Brandon and Eva had a new set of children and grandchildren to add to her already busy life. She and Rae moved to Langley, B.C. in 1984. They began an active social life with Rae’s brother, Bill and his family. They continued to bowl and attended Sharon United Church where Eva joined the choir and UCW. She also sang in the Rainbow Choir, mainly entertaining seniors in the City. She took up quilting again which she loved to do. In 1998, Rae & Eva moved back to Brandon to be closer to family. Nothing was more important to Eva than having her family around. Rae passed away in 2004. In 2005, Eva moved in to Riverheights Terrace where she enjoyed 13 years. She spent many hours with her collection of 407 spoons, each of which had personal meaning for her. Her photo albums of trips and family were neatly organized. In her later years at Sokol Manor and Rideau Park PCH, she enjoyed baseball (especially the Blue Jays) and curling on TV. She also enjoyed playing cards, and played cribbage up to one week prior to her passing. She lived a long, amazing life and her family will miss her forever. Eva is survived by children Bob (Pat) Gouldie, Heather (Roy) Lee, Lynne (Glen) Shipley, Cliff (Diane) Gouldie, and Merle (Donna) Gouldie; step-children Verne (Anita) Gooden, Barry (Susan) Gooden, and Linda (Bob) Jordan; sister Eleanor Seafoot; sisters-in-law Doreen Patterson, Yvonne Patterson, Hilda Gouldie, Florence Hutchison and Mary Gooden; 21 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.
