Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Luten (Hookins)

Mary Elizabeth Luten (Hookins)
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mary at the age of 94 years.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Trevor (Kathleen), Christine (David) and Mark; seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Edwin Luten; her parents Arthur and Charlotte Hookins; and her sisters Grace, Jean, Florence and Audrey.
Mary was born on October 14, 1924 in Carlshalton, Surrey, England. Her early life she experienced the relentless bombing of London, spending many sleepless nights in her family’s bomb shelter. Later, she became a war bride, marrying our father Edwin Luten in 1941. In February 1945, with the war nearing its end, Mary with young infants Trevor and Christine, other war brides and wounded servicemen sailed to Canada aboard the Mauritania. Remembrance Day and the Royal Canadian Legion held a special spot in Mary’s heart. In July 1945 Edwin was discharged from the army and found employment as a telegrapher for the CNR. Over the years we lived in the train stations at Corning, SK; Elie, MB; Bengough, SK and Notre Dame de Lourdes, MB.
In 1968 Ed, Mary and Mark moved to Hartney, where Ed was the CNR Station Agent and Mary joined the staff of the Hartney Medical Nursing Unit, retiring in 1989 and then moving to Brandon. She passed away March 8, 2019 at the Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon, Manitoba. We miss her dearly.
A funeral for Mary will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hartney United Church, Hartney, Manitoba. Interment will follow in the Hartney Riverside Cemetery.
