Obituary for Marion "Joan" Patterson

Marion "Joan" Patterson
PATTERSON: Marion "Joan" Patterson (McMurchy), with her loving family at her side and comforted by her faith, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Joan is survived by her loving husband and life companion of 61 years, Bob, and her devoted son Bobby (Michelle), as well as by family members of whom she was very fond including her sisters-in-law Margaret Greaves and Lois (Don) Kerslake, her niece and four nephews, a number of special cousins, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her dear parents, Archie and Ollie McMurchy, Bob's parents, Gordon and Jessie Patterson, her sister-in-law Willa (Tarleton) Shearer, brother-in-law Tom Greaves, one nephew and her great aunts and uncles as well as cousins with whom she was very close. Joan was born on February 11, 1938 at Reston, Manitoba. She was raised and educated at Reston, and in her youth was a talented figure skater. After completing high school, Joan worked for a period of time as a telephone operator. She then met and married Bob, the love of her life, on September 14, 1957. They initially resided at Souris, Manitoba and subsequently in Yorkton, Saskatchewan where Joan was employed by the Department of National Defence and later as an administrative supervisor for a local hotel chain. She was also a life member of Beta Sigmi Phi. Upon Bobby's birth, Joan became a full time homemaker, which continued when the family moved to Brandon in 1971. Joan was an incredibly supportive wife and a tremendously caring mother, who would do anything or make any sacrifice for her husband and son. In addition to keeping an immaculate home and being a skilled cook and baker, Joan always tried to look her best. She loved jewelry, particularly diamonds, as well as fashion and shopping for clothes, especially hats, purses and shoes. During the summer months in previous years, Joan enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Clear Lake. Joan also had a lifelong passion for animals, and absolutely loved cats and dogs. Over the years, the family has had many cherished pets in the household, and currently have Sabrina, a Siamese cat adopted by Joan and Bob from the Brandon Humane Society. Joan was kind, compassionate, generous, thoughtful, stylish, creative, polite, respectful, and above all, was loved very much by Bob, Bobby, Michelle and her family. The Celebration of Joan's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow at Memories Chapel. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Joan may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7M6.
