Obituary for Margaret Chamberlain Haggerty (Ollay)
HAGGERTY: Margaret Chamberlain (nee Ollay), beloved wife of the late Ernest Haggerty, passed away peacefully at Brandon Regional Health Centre, with family by her side, on October 11, 2018, at the age of 91 years. Mom was very proud to be “ages with the Queen, you know”! (even attending the 60th birthday celebration at Winnipeg’s Government House and chatting with the Premier).
Margaret was born on October 30, 1926 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Andrew and Catherine Ollay, joining siblings Mary and George. During the war years this pretty Scottish lass met a handsome Canadian Soldier. They married in 1945 and Margaret joined many brave War Brides, arriving at Pier 21 to a new home and a new country – all for love! Mom loved her Scotland but was so proud to be Canadian! Margaret & Ernie made Brandon and then Sprucewoods/Shilo their home. They welcomed daughter Honor in 1947 and son Cameron in1950 to their happy, busy life - which consisted of Shilo Curling (getting an 8 ender too); camping and lots of world travelling; all night card games with a house full of friends and laughter; coaching kids sports; leading Girl Guides & Brownies; Cameron’s horse shows with horse Comet; being among founding members of the Sprucewoods Community Hall (which included BINGO and so much more) and being the “go to” for community history as she was one of its longest members – and all of this included a lifetime of wonderful friends – too many to mention – but they all know who they are!!
Sadly Margaret was widowed in 1983. She continued on – joining the Manitoba War Brides Association (even serving as President) - forming so many new friendships & travelling with them to Pier 21 and Holland and more – singing all of the old war songs – bringing many a tear to all eyes; serving as a counselor for the RM of Cornwallis (she loved rules and politics with a passion – as does great-grandson Ryan – so many debates were had by them!); being an avid “cheerleader” to her families’ sports events (she did love sports, and was a great swimmer in her youth); Monday night cribbage (couldn’t beat her on the counts); early morning coffee at the Wildlife Club – arriving at racing speed, on her cherished scooter (giving her family more grey hairs than she had!); and lastly at the age of 75 mastering the computer – amazing everyone with her skills – connecting with family all over the world – right to the end of her life!
She was a cornerstone of our family (even had her Ancestry DNA done), who taught us much. Her MS and Cancer diagnosis did not keep her down. She was a survivor!! We are so thankful that the younger generations of our family got to meet, know & learn from her! She will be truly missed, but as she said “I will be with Dad now! Miss me, but let me go. Laugh! Continue my heritage. I am truly blessed by the family & life God gave me!”
Margaret is survived by Honor (Bob) Nutley; Cameron (Diana); grandchildren Catherine and Robert, Jennifer and Murray; great grandchildren Jenna and Tyce, Paige and Ashton, Ryan and Eric, Caitlin and Brenna; all of her FAVORITE nieces and nephews and all of her family and friends. Family extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of the doctors and staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre and Home Care for their care and compassion.
