Obituary for Velma Jean Rankin

Velma Jean  Rankin
On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, Velma Jean Rankin, age 93 years, passed away at Fairview Home. The youngest daughter of Fred and Lucy Young of Kelwood, Manitoba, Velma was born March 4, 1925 at Alsask, Saskatchewan. She lived at Marengo, Saskatchewan until 1937 when the family moved to Kelwood, where she attended school at Roskeen. In 1948, Velma moved to Dauphin and worked for Mary Maxim. She married Bruce Rankin in 1949. After a time, the family moved to Onanole and operated a store from 1955-1960. Returning to Dauphin for a few years, the family was on the move again in 1964, this time to Clear Lake, when Bruce worked for Riding Mountain National Park. Brandon became home in 1967 when Bruce accepted a transfer to the Department of Indian Affairs. Velma worked at the Brandon Co-op for several years, retiring in 1990 from the Brandon Sun after 17 years of dedication. Velma enjoyed being a member of Rebekah Lodge No. 13, Dauphin and the Royal Canadian Legion Aux. No. 3, Brandon. Velma is survived by her daughters Donna (John) Sargent, Linda (Kenneth) McLaughlin, Elaine (Danny) Bryan; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Bruce, parents Fred and Lucy, brothers John and Gordon and sister Margaret. The Celebration of Velma's Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, Brandon, on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating. A reception will follow. Interment will take place at Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Velma may be made to a charity of choice.
