Obituary for Leona Beth Kowaluk

Leona Beth Kowaluk
On March 19, 2018, Leona Beth Kowaluk passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with her children and grandchildren at her side. On September 21, 1942, Leona was born in Birtle Manitoba. Out of 8 siblings, she was the first to be born in a hospital. She attended the Lansburne School from grade 1 to 8 and then high school in Foxwarren. Living over a mile away meant walking to the one room school or taking the horses and toboggan, democrat or van to get there. Leona never remembers school to be a place to learn but rather a place to mingle and enjoy time with others.

Growing up, she was more of a tom-boy and loved to play baseball and fix things with a jack knife. She was always one for having fun or up for a good joke that stemmed back to a very young age. Hardwork also started for Leona on the farm at the age of 10 riding on the sweep picking up hay, handling the square bales and doing the summer fallow with her Uncle’s JD tractor.

Leona started psychiatric nursing at the Brandon Mental Health Center and completed 2 years of the 3 year course. After the second year she met Archie and married in 1961. She will be sadly missed by her 5 children Marion, Sally, Terraus, Eva and Taresa and their loving partners Jim, Jim, Gayle, Blaine, Carl and Bud. Eight grandchildren: Destiny (Sean), Chelsea (Jesse), Misty (Braden), Tyler, Hailey, Miranda, Mackenzie, Liam and 5 great grandchildren: Veyda, Ryden, Brae, Kace and Adilynn.

Spending time with her family was her favorite pass time along with writing, woodworking and whittling. Four words that seem to reasonably describe Leona were resourceful, carefree, unpredictable and strong. She had a lot of family around her most of her life and was also rewarded with deep and unwavering friendships.

Until we meet again, we say with a heavy sigh,
Farewell, we will miss you, but never goodbye!

A private reception was held in honor of Leona on March 22nd, 2018 at Memories Chapel, Brandon, Manitoba. Leona's cremated remains were placed at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Columbarium.
