Obituary for Margaret Anne "Ginger" Young

Margaret Anne "Ginger" Young
On Thursday, September 7, 2017, Margaret Anne “Ginger” Young, age 81, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harvey; sons Cameron (Gordana) and Scott (Margaret); daughter Susan (Brian) and 7 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Margaret Baird. Ginger was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on January 28, 1936 and received her early education there. The family moved to Melfort, Saskatchewan in 1951 where she completed her high school education. She then enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Alberta hospital in Edmonton, graduating with RN Diploma in 1957. After graduation she worked for a short time at the University of Alberta hospital. It was in Edmonton that she met the love of her life, Harvey, and they were married on August 28th, 1957. The first addition to the family, Cameron, arrived a year later. After a short stint in the oil patch in Calgary, Harvey accepted a position with Brandon University and the family moved to Brandon in 1960 where Scott and Susan were born. At this time Ginger devoted herself to raising her three children. In 1976, she began a much-enjoyed 21 year career as a coordinator of clinical lab at the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing. She also provided lab support for nursing students taking the Anatomy and Physiology course at Brandon University. During this period she continued her studies and received a Bachelor of General Studies degree from Brandon University in 1979. Ginger lived an active life. She enjoyed swimming, golf, downhill skiing, and especially cross-country skiing. While living in New Zealand, Ginger became hooked on the fiber arts and learned to spin and weave and they became her favourite pastimes. It was through these activities that she made many friends. She was a talented sewer, knitter and quilter. Ginger loved to cook and entertain her many friends. Her dessert parties were legendary. She devoted many hours to volunteer work, especially the Westman CPR Network and to data collection for several health-related surveys. Ginger was instrumental in the formation of Brandon’s first co-operative day nursery. She was an avid reader, and in 1997 co-founded a book club that still exists. After retiring in 1997, Ginger and her husband travelled widely to Australia, South Africa, China, South America, and Egypt. They lived for a year in both England and New Zealand when Harvey was on sabbatical leave. In addition to her travels elsewhere she spent nearly every summer at one of her favourite spots- the family cabin at Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Ginger was a much loved mother and wife. A kind and generous person with a wide circle of friends, she lived life to the fullest. The Celebration of Ginger’s Life took place on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church. Arlene Robertson officiated. Donations in memory of Ginger may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, #3-2430 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7B 0M5, or to a charity of your choice.
